Multiple Award - Winning Bassist,
Composer, Band Leader
16-year-old Gabriel Severn developed a love for bass before he could even talk. His devotion to music and his desire to master every aspect of the instrument has taken him on an eventful musical journey: he's received a YoungArts award, six DownBeat awards, two Jazz Education Network awards, and two award nominations from the Central PA Music Hall of Fame. He's performed coast to coast, appeared at many notable music festivals, performed alongside several of his musical idols, recorded with artists from around the world, leads his own band, recorded his award-winning original music with prominent jazz artists, and received global radio airplay.
Teen Town is Severn's DownBeat award-winning, powerhouse jazz fusion trio. With Logan Bedard on drums and Connor Rohrer on keyboards, these young musicians are taking audiences by storm with their energy, their undeniable chemistry, and their exceptional talent. Named after one of the great jazz fusion tunes of the 1970s, Teen Town brings its own creative voice to the jazz fusion genre, performing original compositions as well as unique covers weaving jazz, funk, rock, and world rhythms into tunes by luminaries such as the Average White Band, Weather Report, the Yellowjackets, and Chick Corea. The band has been nominated twice for a Central PA Music Award.
Severn's love of Brazilian bossa nova and samba inspired him to write his 2018 debut single, "Song for Fina", which was dedicated to a close family friend for her birthday. The tune earned him a DownBeat Student Music Award and was followed by "Kick Start", which he dedicated to his project's Kickstarter backers. "Kick Start" earned him another DownBeat award for composition. Severn teamed up with multiple Emmy Award winner and multiple GRAMMY Award nominee Chieli Minucci on guitar and in the producer's seat. Also featured on the project are Special EFX members and world-class musicians Joel Rosenblatt on drums and Jay Rowe on keys. "Song for Fina" was selected for the Jazz Education Network Young Composers Showcase, and Severn performed the tune with the U.S. Navy Commodores at the 2020 JEN conference in New Orleans.
